Ode to Sun
Yanyan arrives in DisCity as part of an Eastian delegation to help destroy the Sun Crow. At the first strategy meeting between the Eastians and DisCity, Yanyan recites the Ode to Sun, a millennia-old myth detailing the origin of the Sun Crow and the method to destroy it. She says that they must "snap off a branch from the blessed tree, take the Dragon's Vein from the East Sea, weave a Wraith Spirit fletching, and finally craft an Almighty Bow"; this instruction is mostly met with confusion and derision by the assembled officials. Yanyan tries to convince them, but Du Ruo is forced to intercede and act as an interpreter. Thanks to Du Ruo's efforts, the Schorl representing Paradeisos orders that the Eastians' mythological pursuits are to be supported by the MBCC.
Yanyan begins working with the Chief, and is excited to learn that they are having similar dreams of the Great Seer of Sunset Town. However, while Yanyan is comforted by the visions in which she believes the Seer is encouraging her to carry on, the Chief is deeply disturbed but what they see as a horrific, contaminated figure. In search of the blessed tree from the prophecy, Yanyan leads the Chief and their FAC escort to the partially-reawakened ruins of BR-002. There, Yanyan is confused but enchanted by the many differences between her home and Drifter Camp; she bonds over a cultural exchange with Greta and learns about the battle against the Black Ring. Although events don't exactly line up with her expectations from the prophecy, they manage to retrieve a crystallized contaminant from the top of the High Tower ruins which Yanyan approximates to the sacred branch, and the Chief reassures her that there are many ways of interpreting myths which may not be what one first expected.
Next, they head to the Rust, where once-stable corruption has begun to rise and flow towards Eastside. They rescue a scavenger from the flood of contamination, and despite the Chief's objection, Yanyan allows him to serve as their guide by using Eastian sorcery to protect him. Yanyan is terrified by the wreckage of the carnival rides around BR-001, having never encountered anything like an amusement park back home, where frequent devastation has prevented society from ever building back up to the point where such a frivolity could be possible. They are attacked by dragon-like corruptors, which struggle for control of their own actions; upon slaying them, Yanyan discovers a fiery, worm-like creature within their bodies that seemed to be restricting their movements, and identifies it as the prophesied dragon's vein. The strange existence unsettles the Chief and FAC, but upon returning to the MBCC, a Schorl scans it and confirms that it is not from DisCity and has properties that repel the Apostle's kin, reconfirming the value of their mission.
Unlike the previous excursions, Yanyan is trepidatious about setting out on their third mission; she confesses to the Chief that they need the blessing of the "Divine Lord" to craft an arrow that can shoot down the Sun Crow, but that few Seers have ever managed to channel the fearsome spirit. Upon reaching their destination of Keylan Square she and the Chief witness an apparition invisible to everyone else nearby. It instructs Yanyan to complete a series of bizarre tasks, which cause not only the FAC soldiers accompanying them but even Yanyan herself to doubt whether she has interpreted the Divine Lord's commands correctly. The Chief reassures her that even if their actions are pointless, the devotion she is showing will surely bring her closer to the Divine Lord, and indeed when Yanyan communes with it again, the spirit visits them in the form of a fat bird that leaves behind two golden feathers to use as fletching for their arrows. Satisfied and exhausted by heavy use of her powers, Yanyan quickly falls asleep; she is carried back to base by the FAC soldiers, won over by her persistence and dedication. While she sleeps, Yanyan inadvertently begins to channel the Sun Crow. Believing that she is conversing with the Great Seer, she nearly allows the Apostle to possess her body, and is saved only by the timely rescue of Du Ruo and the FAC's anti-Mania technology.
Yanyan begins to craft the sacred bow, but is overwhelmed by anxiety at having to live up to the Great Seer's example. Du Ruo tries to soothe Yanyan's anxiety about living up to the example of the Great Seer of Sunset Town by talking about the Great Seer from her own perspective, humanizing her, sharing examples of her failures and foibles, and revealing how the Seer had to struggle to achieve the things that Yanyan idolizes. Her stories calm Yanyan down, allowing her to finish the bow and look forward to facing the Sun Crow. The next day, Yanyan succeeds at firing a direct shot into the Sun Crow. Her arrow temporarily suppresses it, but without the power of collective belief in the legend that the Almighty Bow had to draw upon in Eastia, it is insufficient to defeat the Sun Crow. When the Sun Crow breaks free, it again invades Yanyan's mind and she collapses; Du Ruo takes her unconscious body to safety.
The Eastians regroup in WhiteSands and observe the Sun Crow's attack from a distance. With the forces of DisCity having turned against them, they debate whether or not they should leave the city to its fate. Yanyan accuses Du Ruo of having lied to her, knowing all along that the Sun Shot wouldn't work, but Du Ruo replies that that's the thing about faith — nobody can be sure what is true until the very moment it happens. Yanyan reflects on all the people she met in DisCity and decides that there must be something they can believe in just like the people of Eastia believe in their legends — and besides, she doesn't want them to suffer the way the Eastians have. At Yanyan's urging, the envoys decide to stay. Yanyan channels the Sun Crow, entering the Apostle's mind just as it previously entered hers in order to weaken it. In the final battle, she uses her sorcery to assist the FAC while the Chief defeats the Sun Crow with a new Almighty Bow.
Later, in the sand of the battlefield, Yanyan finds a strange egg containing an infant Yao.
